How to Choose the Perfect Christmas Tree Size for Your Home

Selecting the right Christmas tree size is one of the most important steps in creating a beautifully styled festive space. At Jake Decorates, we always recommend thinking through a few key details to make sure your tree fits your home perfectly, both physically and visually.

Here’s what to consider when choosing your Christmas tree size.

1. Measure Your Ceiling Height

Start by measuring the height of the ceiling where you plan to place your tree.

Allow about 15–30 cm (6–12 inches) of clearance between the top of the tree and the ceiling, including the tree topper if you’re using one.

  • For standard homes with 2.4 m (8 ft) ceilings, a 7 ft tree (around 2.1 m) is usually a great choice.

  • Homes with higher ceilings (2.7 m–3 m or more) can accommodate 8–10 ft trees for a dramatic look.

2. Consider the Width of the Tree

Height isn’t everything width makes a big difference too.

  • Full trees suit large living rooms, open-plan homes, or grand entryways where you want a bold, traditional statement.

  • Slim trees are perfect for smaller spaces, apartments, or cosy corners where you don’t want to overwhelm the room.

  • Pencil trees are extra narrow and work beautifully in hallways, stair landings, or as a secondary decorative tree.

3. Think About the Room Layout

Take a moment to look at the spot where your tree will stand.

  • Will it be a focal point you can admire from different angles?

  • Is it tucked into a corner, framed by a window, or sitting beside furniture?

Choosing a size that balances the room without blocking pathways or making the space feel cramped helps your décor look polished and intentional.

4. Match the Scale to Your Decorating Style

If you love the look of a lush, layered designer tree (like the ones we create at Jake Decorates), consider a slightly taller and fuller tree. It will showcase ornaments, ribbons, and florals beautifully.

If your style is minimal or playful, a smaller or slimmer tree may be the perfect fit and easier to decorate.

Final Thoughts

Picking the right size tree makes decorating so much easier and ensures your Christmas display looks intentional and inviting. Whether you’re after a classic 7 ft evergreen or a towering 10 ft statement tree, start with your ceiling height, room size, and style goals.
